A well-constructed speech often follows a pattern: Your introducer tells the audience why you deserve their attention (ethos), you perhaps open with a funny story (pathos) before moving into your key arguments (logos), and then you build to a stirring ending that leaves people buzzing about your call to action (pathos).

Fourth, the Importance of Stories

To paraphrase Mark Twain, every good speaker should have the calm confidence of a Christian with four aces up his sleeve. Deep into a speech with too much dryness, you need to be able to pluck those stories out of the air and entertain as well as persuade your audience. Kathleen Hall Jamieson, a specialist in communications in the electronic age, points out that Ronald Reagan never made a speech to rival FDR’s first inaugural or Kennedy’s speech in Berlin or LBJ’s on civil rights, but Reagan was a very effective communicator. He loved to tell stories and, as Jamieson says, translated words into memorable television pictures. When you have a moment, please revisit his first inaugural as he recalled the heroes who gave their last full measure in order to protect American democracy.
